SpaceX Starship SN9
In early 2021, SpaceX pushed the limits of reusable rocket design with Starship SN9, a stainless steel prototype launched from Boca Chica, Texas on February 2.
SN9 climbed to 10 km, completing a 6-minute flight and demonstrating the now-iconic “belly flop” descent. A failed engine relight during landing caused the vehicle to crash, but the test delivered critical data that directly shaped future Starship designs.
The metal in this display is a genuine piece of SN9, recovered from debris on Boca Chica Beach following the flight.
A real fragment from one of the most ambitious spacecraft programs ever built—capturing a moment of failure that helped drive rapid progress toward fully reusable spaceflight.
