Argon's atomic number is 18 and its symbol is Ar. Argon is more than twice as abundant as water vapor on Earth, making up about 1% of the Earth's atmosphere. It gets its name from a Greek word that means “lazy” or “inactive”. It earned this name because it does not react with any other element. This makes it very useful when trying to prevent elements from reacting with elements in the atmosphere. Argon is used in fluorescent light bulbs to preserve fragile metal filaments and in welding to create a stable environment around the working area. The argon in this element cube display is under vacuum. This means that the gas ampule glows a white color when placed by a high-voltage, high-frequency electrical field (such as the field produced by a Tesla Coil). The sealed glass ampule is suspended in crystal clear Lucite acrylic.

Safety

We get asked about the radioactivity and overall safety of the periodic tables/cubes from time to time. These are legitimate concerns and we wanted to address those concerns here. Although there are several elements in the cubes that are dangerous or toxic, the acrylic and glass ampules make the products safe to handle and store.

The average American is exposed to 0.034 mrem/hr from background radiation (300 mrem/year). In other words, a person will get three times the radiation from natural background radiation which includes the sun, food, radon, and the environment, than they will from holding a radioactive element in one of our Lucite Acrylic displays.

Care Instructions

Wash with mild soap or detergent and lukewarm water. Use a clean, soft cloth, or sponge. Rinse and blot dry with a damp cloth or chamois.

*Never use abrasive cleaners, household cleaners, window-cleaning fluids, scouring compounds, gritty cloths, or strong solvents such as alcohol, acetone, carbon tetrachloride, etc.*

To maintain the brilliant luster of acrylic, wax and occasionally with a quality grade of automobile paste wax (NOT A CLEANER WAX COMBINATION.) Apply a thin coat with a clean, cotton flannel cloth. Then wipe with a clean damp cloth. NEVER USE HOUSEHOLD SPRAY WAXES.
