Carbon's atomic number is 6 and its symbol is C. Carbon atoms can bond together in many different ways producing graphite, diamond, and buckminsterfullerene. Carbon gets its name from the Latin word “coal” because carbon makes up a large portion of coal. Carbon is part of all organic life. When combined with hydrogen and oxygen, it forms important compounds including sugars, alcohols, fats, and esters. The diamond allotrope of carbon is used widely in industry for its hardness and heat conductivity.

Safety

We get asked about the radioactivity and overall safety of the periodic tables/cubes from time to time. These are legitimate concerns and we wanted to address those concerns here. Although there are several elements in the cubes that are dangerous or toxic, the acrylic and glass ampules make the products safe to handle and store.

The average American is exposed to 0.034 mrem/hr from background radiation (300 mrem/year). In other words, a person will get three times the radiation from natural background radiation which includes the sun, food, radon, and the environment, than they will from holding a radioactive element in one of our Lucite Acrylic displays.

Care Instructions

Wash with mild soap or detergent and lukewarm water. Use a clean, soft cloth, or sponge. Rinse and blot dry with a damp cloth or chamois.

*Never use abrasive cleaners, household cleaners, window-cleaning fluids, scouring compounds, gritty cloths, or strong solvents such as alcohol, acetone, carbon tetrachloride, etc.*

To maintain the brilliant luster of acrylic, wax and occasionally with a quality grade of automobile paste wax (NOT A CLEANER WAX COMBINATION.) Apply a thin coat with a clean, cotton flannel cloth. Then wipe with a clean damp cloth. NEVER USE HOUSEHOLD SPRAY WAXES.

Great gift for chemists

Got this for an anniversary and it made them very happy, it's a very clear cube so you can see it perfectly. Also doesn't break when dropped.

A great gift for guys

I got it as a desk piece for my partner and it’s his new blanket. He is always holding it in his hand while working at his computer. He's always glancing at it all the time. He even uses it as a back scratcher as weird as that sounds. He uses it to just look at when talking on the phone. He eventually wants the entire set if cubes. Great product!

Okay, not great

I was hesitant to spend this much on a chunk of carbon, but I trust engineered labs and have liked a lot of my other purchases from the business (their periodic table is great!). I was disappointed this time though, the lettering was crooked and the surface looked a little scratched.
