Magnesium's atomic number is 12 and its symbol is Mg. Magnesium is a bright silver/white metal that makes up a large portion of the earth's mantle and about 13% of the earth's total mass. Magnesium powder was used by early photographers to produce the flash. Although a chunk of magnesium is flammable, magnesium shavings burn with ease producing a very bright and hot reaction. Magnesium is also very light, weighing about half as much as aluminum. However, it is unlike aluminum in the ductile department. Magnesium is brittle and cracks along sheer lines when put under enough stress.
