Iodine is a halogen within the atomic number 53. Its symbol is I. Iodine is an essential ion in the body and helps the thyroid produce specific hormones. Although it is a metallic solid at room temperature it forms a brilliant purple gas when heat is applied to it.

Iodine is also an essential element for animals to produce thyroid hormones. This is why some countries have started to produce and sell iodized salt in order to ensure adequate consumption of the element. Iodine is also used as an effective disinfectant although how it specifically works is unknown.
