Thulium's atomic number is 69 and its symbol is Tm. It is an easily workable metal with a bright silvery-gray luster. It is fairly soft and slowly tarnishes in air. Despite its high price and rarity, thulium is used as the radiation source in portable X-ray devices, and in some solid-state lasers. It has no significant biological role and is not particularly toxic.

High-purity thulium oxide was first offered commercially in the late 1950s, as a result of the adoption of ion-exchange separation technology. Lindsay Chemical Division of American Potash & Chemical Corporation offered it in grades of 99% and 99.9% purity. The price per kilogram oscillated between US$4,600 and $13,300 in the period from 1959 to 1998 for 99.9% purity, and it was the second highest for the lanthanides behind lutetium.

This display is contained within crystal clear lucite acrylic.

Safety

We get asked about the radioactivity and overall safety of the periodic tables/cubes from time to time. These are legitimate concerns and we wanted to address those concerns here. Although there are several elements in the cubes that are dangerous or toxic, the acrylic and glass ampules make the products safe to handle and store.

The average American is exposed to 0.034 mrem/hr from background radiation (300 mrem/year). In other words, a person will get three times the radiation from natural background radiation which includes the sun, food, radon, and the environment, than they will from holding a radioactive element in one of our Lucite Acrylic displays.

Care Instructions

Wash with mild soap or detergent and lukewarm water. Use a clean, soft cloth, or sponge. Rinse and blot dry with a damp cloth or chamois.

Another great cube from Engineered Labs. I have been buying from them for about two years now and will continue to do so. Amazing customer service!
