Bromine is a halogen similar to chlorine or iodine. Bromine's atomic number is 35 and its symbol is Br. Bromine is one of only two elements that are liquid at room temperature alongside mercury. This blood-colored liquid fumes at room temperature when exposed to air producing an amber-colored vapor. Bromine gets its name from a Greek word meaning “stench” because of its sharp and unpleasant smell. Elemental bromine is not found naturally because of its high reactivity. Commercially bromine is harvested in salt form from deep water lakes also known as brine pools. As you move this cube display back and forth you can see the bromine slosh back and forth, briefly painting the inside of the glass ampule red before settling back at the bottom.

Safety

We get asked about the radioactivity and overall safety of the periodic tables/cubes from time to time. These are legitimate concerns and we wanted to address those concerns here. Although there are several elements in the cubes that are dangerous or toxic, the acrylic and glass ampules make the products safe to handle and store.

The average American is exposed to 0.034 mrem/hr from background radiation (300 mrem/year). In other words, a person will get three times the radiation from natural background radiation which includes the sun, food, radon, and the environment, than they will from holding a radioactive element in one of our Lucite Acrylic displays.

Care Instructions

Wash with mild soap or detergent and lukewarm water. Use a clean, soft cloth, or sponge. Rinse and blot dry with a damp cloth or chamois.

*Never use abrasive cleaners, household cleaners, window-cleaning fluids, scouring compounds, gritty cloths, or strong solvents such as alcohol, acetone, carbon tetrachloride, etc.*

To maintain the brilliant luster of acrylic, wax and occasionally with a quality grade of automobile paste wax (NOT A CLEANER WAX COMBINATION.) Apply a thin coat with a clean, cotton flannel cloth. Then wipe with a clean damp cloth. NEVER USE HOUSEHOLD SPRAY WAXES.

Loved it!!

I buy an element cube every year for my partner’s birthday, and this is by far her favorite of all the ones she’s received. The cube was crystal clear (as they always are) and the bromine sample and the glass ampule itself were a good size. It looks great alongside the rest of her (growing) collection!
