Oxygen Element Cube
Oxygen's atomic number is 8 and its symbol is O. Oxygen is a vital component of photosynthesis and makes up about 21% of the earth's atmosphere. Oxygen reacts with most elements to form an oxide. Although hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe, oxygen is the most abundant element in the earth's biosphere by mass. Every year one hundred million tons of oxygen are extracted from the air for industrial use. This is simply done by separating the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water molecules using electricity. Oxygen gas is used to help people with pulmonary disorders, enable combustion when high heat is necessary, and as life support for scuba divers and astronauts. When liquid oxygen is created it is a light blue color.
The oxygen sample in this element cube is under a vacuum. This means that it can be illuminated using an electrical field similar to neon signs. When oxygen gas is illuminated it produces a light blue color.
