Silver's atomic number is 47 and its symbol is Ag. Silver’s name comes from the Latin word for “shiny” or “white”. Silver is the most reflective metal, which is why it is sometimes used to make mirror surfaces. Silver was the first metal to be used as currency, even before gold, and is still being used for this purpose today. The current value of an ounce of silver in spring 2021 is $25 USD. Silver is also used to make jewelry, electrodes, and kitchenware.

The downsides to silver are that it tarnishes to a dark grey color over time and is very soft. For this reason, it is often alloyed with other metals or used as a surface plating.
